Refugee Empowerment Program (REP) - January 13, 2010
REP is one of the partner organizations located at 258 N. Merton as part of the shared space ministry of the Center for Transforming Communities. Afternoons (M-TH), staff and volunteers of REP offer tutoring and mentoring for the children of recent immigrants and refugees living in the Binghampton neighborhood. On this day, the children received some special visitors and a gift. Working collaboratively with the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation, the children were visited by the missionaries from Samaritan's Feet who provided a new pair of shoes to each child. Emmanuel Ohonme (pictured in the first photo), founder of Samaritan's Feet, was a young boy in Nigeria when he received a pair of tennis shoes. The shoes, which led to his participation in athletics and led to a basketball scholarship in the US, transformed Ohonme's life. Before receiving the shoes, the children were also visited by a local basketball celebrity, Hasheem Thabeet (pictured in the 3rd photo) of the Grizzlies. Originally from Tanzania, Thabeet shared a bit of his story with the children.
Trinity UMC youth group reclaim unused space for ministry - February 27, 2010
On February, 27, 2010, twenty youth and adults from Trinity UMC and Ellendale UMC ended their 30 hour fast at the Center for Transforming Communities. For the service part of their week-end of fasting, worship and spiritual growth, the youth spruced up the grounds of 258 N. Merton and assisted the Center for Transforming Communities in our effort to reclaim four rooms in the building for ministry and service. According to Camille Bradley, youth pastor, the hands-on service given to the Center and the Binghamton neighborhood was one of the most meaningful parts of the week-end. The youth and adults broke their fast in a most special way by partaking in Holy Communion on the grounds of 258 N. Merton. Thank you Trinity and Ellendale youth!
